BERMUDA marriage - Rev. William Nairn and Susanna Joell 1726-1727
« on: Thursday 31 January 19 05:58 GMT (UK) »
Rev. William NAIRN married Susannah JOELL, the daughter of William JOELL and Susanna STAFFORD in late 1726 or early 1727 in Bermuda.   Nairn had succeeded to some land shares for the free school in Bermuda and was appointed rector of Pembroke and Devonshire in 1721/22.  In March 1727 he was involved in a dispute with the churchwardens of Hamilton Tribe regarding his salary.   He left Bermuda in 1727 to take up a post at Henrico parish in Virginia.

In a letter from Andrew Auchinleek, the rector of St George's parish, to Bishop Gibson of London dated 5 Oct 1727 Auchinleek refers to Nairn's abrupt departure from Bermuda and to his marriage a few months earlier [Fulham Papers, Vol XVII, 15-16].

As the rector of a parish I presume William Nairn would have either invited a neighbouring clergyman to come to his parish to perform the wedding or he and Susanna would have gone to a neighbouring parish, perhaps St George’s given the letter from Auchinleek.

Does anyone know if marriage registers for 1726-1727 survive or have been transcribed for any parish in Bermuda, particularly Pembroke or St George?

Thank you for that reference.  It looks as though no parish has complete records for the crucial period 1726-1727, and only Southampton and Devonshire having a few additions past 1700 and 1706.  Unfortunately the nearest copy of the book is 800 kms away.

Found a copy of Hollis Hallett's guide to Bermuda parishes online at archive.org/details/earlybermudareco00holl/page/n7.  Registers for six parishes have not survived, including St George.  However I have found a few other references to my Nairn relatives.
