Thanks! That’s great. And confirms that Elizabeth was illegitimate. But no sign of a marriage that might help with Richard  :'(

More about Jane Miller/Cartwright:

Baptism:
1857 01 01   Jane   MILLER NEWARK St Mary Magdalene   Father Henry, Musician  Mother Elizabeth  Abode  Water La

1861 census:
Water Lane, Newark:
Elizabeth Miller age 40, married, musician, born Germany
Hannah Miller 12 daughter b Lincoln
Caroline Miller, 10, born Sleaford
Emily Miller age 8 b Newark
Adam Miller 6 b Newark
Jane Miller 4 b Newark

(another son, Henry, missed the census and was baptised in may 1861).

From free BMD:
Marriages Mar 1868
Fenton    Charles        Newark    7b   375
Kettle    Sarah         Newark    7b   375
Miller    Caroline         Newark    7b   375
Stansall    John         Newark    7b   375

From the 1891 census, at 25 Gray St, Newarke, leic:
Richard Cartwright age 37
Jane Cartwright age 35
Elizabeth Cartwright age 18
Henry Cartwright age 16
Jane Jackson (cousin) age 10         (all mentioned in posts above).

However, also on the 1891 census there is this:
at 20, Cherry Holt, Newark:
Caroline Fenton age 40, widow
Henry Fenton (son) age 17
Robert Fenton (son) age 8
Charles Fenton (son) age 14
Eliza Fenton (daug) age 3
Jane Cartwright, sister, age 38, married, visiting
Emma Jackson (neice) age 20

----all above born in Newark.

I think Jane has been enuerated twice in 1891, what do others think? This would also pin Jane Cartwright down as Jane Morris.

Very good! That’s that all tied up then. I think Jane Miller’s father was German too, but it’s been a while since I looked into that. I reckon you’re right about the double enumeration too.

I can’t believe how difficult it’s been! Especially for someone relatively close to me in descent - only my grandad’s grandad. So many mysteries have been tied up but this one just won’t go. It’s almost certain that William and Richard were relations, seeing as they lived at the same house at different times and were both chimney sweeps, plus William’s association with Richard’s son Henry.

I know that Jane is not the main focus here, but in the interests of completeness, it looks as though she may have died in 1944; if that is her, she shares a grave plot in Welford Rd with people of surnames Baker. Just recording this to come back to if it might be helpful at some point.

Well she certainly lived a long life. That’s good. And yes, maybe a descendant will one day stumble upon this thread and that would be invaluable for them. I had a similar experience yesterday, with a gentleman who found one thread I started and has since got in touch and assisted me greatly.

I can't see William in the 1901 census although obviously if he died in 1910, he should be there. Can you give any pointers?
