...There is a John Tierney who died in Granville on 28 May 1896.  Thought it might be worth noting, in case he's another relative.

Could he be John, born in 1880?

There is possibly no connection, but I thought I would mention this (I don't think the following was previously mentioned):   ;)

In 1880, the Tierneys were living in Mineville.
In 1892, the Tierneys were living in Moriah.

1880 Mineville Census - Gleason family
Martin Gleason, age 46, Works in Iron? Mines?, born Ireland
Mary, age 36, wife, Keeping House, born Ireland
James, age 13
Margret, age 11
Mary, age 9
John, age 4
William, age 10/12, born Aug
All children were born in New York.  All were listed as Martin's and Mary's children.

1892 Moriah Census - Gleason
Martin, age 60, born Ireland
Mary, age 48, born Ireland
Maggie, age 24
Mary A, age 21
John, age 16
Wm, age 13
Possibly Mary A. Mc G???, age 6 (it doesn't state if she was in their household)
All children were born in New York

Could Martin Gleason be a relative of Mary Gleason Tierney?  The Tierney and Gleason children shared common first names; were they just common names or did the Tierney and Gleason parents follow an Irish naming pattern?

Note:  The 1900 Moriah census stated that Martin Gleason immigrated in 1854.  So, possibly not a relative?  Or, could he be an uncle or other family member?

Clare/Canada      Vaus: Sussex/Surrey      Wakefield: Tuam or Ballinasloe, Ireland              (Surname: Originated/Place Last Lived)  (Canadians lived in Ontario)

This isn't much help and perhaps some of it may have already been mentioned but:
Thomas L Tierney, according to his marriage document, WWI Draft Reg Card, and Social Security App and Claims Index was born in Mineville, New York.

In 1900, it was claimed that Mary Tierney was the mother of 10 children, 7 still living.  According to the New York Death Index, two girls/women died in 1893:
Kate, 21 March, Mineville
Maggie, 17 February, Mineville
Unfortunately, no ages were given.  Perhaps Tierney was a common name in that part of New York and these women were not related; or, perhaps they were Mary's daughters?

I don't know how I missed it earlier tonight (when I started looking around) but this looks like the family in 1880:
1880 Mineville, Essex County, New York Census
Michael Tierney, age 28, works in Mines, born Ireland
Mary, age 25, wife, Keeping House, born Ireland
Maggie, age 2, daughter, born Pennsylvania
John, age 4/12, (born March), son, born New York
   (Found on Familysearch website)

Update:  The pay site that I use shows the family as Tiernery in 1880.

Good spot Lisa.  ;)

Maggie born Pennsylvania - so perhaps a PA marriage for Michael and Mary  ???

1880 census  - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MZ83-N1B

Thank you for the insight, I appreciate it! I do know at least one of their children (James Tierney / NY Giants Secretary was born in Mineville, so i'll have to look and see if I can find the information you were referencing about the others (like John, didn't have him?).
