Missing from 1861 census?
« on: Thursday 31 January 19 17:53 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I am wondering if anyone may be willing to help me? My ancestor Ralph/Raphael Hollinshead died in 1853 and was buried in Rushton Spencer. His wife Ann then died in 1856 and was buried in Leek. Their children were fairly grown up by this point. They were John 1826, Ellen 1828, Thomas 1831, Hannah 1835, Ralph 1839 and William 1843.
John was married to a Sarah Bloor, Ellen to Thomas Dale, Thomas and Ralph never married and the rest married post 1861.
I found Ralph boardering with the Birch family, but can not find any of the others. They were all born in Leek.
I am wondering whether they were all together and the surname may have been transcribed wrong.
Anyone able to help?
Langley, Broughton, Taylor, Broad, Cooper, Owen, Bennion, Yorke, Knox, Norcup, Holland, Brookes, White, Davies, Huntbach, Bowler, Barnett.

There is a William Hollinshead, aged 17 working for a Farmer as a Carter in Endon, Longsdon and Stanley, Staffs in 1861.

Farmer is 68 year old Samuel White. Might that be William?

This census 1861 1945/17/28. (Above)
Also shows Ralph Hollinshead with William.
Ralph has been transcribed as 30 yrs but it looks more like 20 yrs.

Looks like Ellen may have been shown with a birthplace of Longton.

An Ellen Dale aged 33, with husband Thomas and 2 daughters is living in Longton, Stoke on Trent. Her birthplace of Longton has been 'dittoed' under several others born in Longton. Could be your Ellen.

Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

Are you sure the mother Ann died pre 1861 please?

There is an Ann Hollinshead aged 61 born Leek - a widow, with a son Thomas aged 29 and a daughter, Hannah aged 26, both born Leek - also living in Ensdon, Longsdon and Stanley in 1861.
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

Thank you! Are you using ancestry.com? Im on FindMyPast and cant find the records even with your information.

Ann may not have died when I thought, so this could be them.

Ellen had a son William in 1850. I had seen the record with the two daughter, but did disregard it.

Long shot I know -- but a John Hollinshead with a wife Sarah, John, born in Leek is shown with an age of 45 living in Burslem. Should be 35 if it's your John. He is a Carter and wife Sarah is 36.

They have several children;
Ann J aged 10 born Leek
John Arthur aged 7 born Leek
Sarah Ann aged 4 born Burslem
William 11mths born Burslem

I am just wondering if he may have got his age wrong! (Clutching at straws).

Tom -- I am using Ancestry -- but if your Ellen had a son, William in 1850 -- he is not with her in 1861, hence that may not be your Ellen who is shown with a Longton birthplace. Could do with checking the GRO to check maiden name for the 2 daughters with her. I will do that.
