was Elizabeth married or not
« on: Friday 01 February 19 14:23 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I am trying to find information on the Richards family John Richards born abt 1795 and Jane ? born abt 1790

They have daughters Mary born abt 1821 and Elizabeth abt 1824 Penegoes

On the 1851 census Elizabeth Richards (daughter ) is a home with her parents also 8 month old Jane Brees gradaughter

On the 1861 census I found Jane Brees down as Stepdaughter with William and Elizabeth Evans Elizabeth married William in 1854.

I am not sure if Elizabeth was married to Jane father  Mr Brees or she was not married,  if not married I thought Jane name would be Jane Richards.

any idea's kind regards Sue

Jane is stepdaughter to the head of house, if William was janes father you would think she would be down as daughter.

It seems to me more likely that Jane acquired her stepfathers name, not very unusual

Hi Mike thanks for your help I would like to know were she got the name Brees  as her step father name was Evans and her mother maiden name was Richards if a child is illegitimate they normally take the name of the mother its just that I can not find a marriage for Elizabeth and Mr Brees  it may be Elizabeth gave Jane her father name but I guess we will never know . Thanks again for your help kind regards Sue

Could this be her

GRO birth registration:

Jane Richards, Q3 1850, Machynlleth 27 91

Mothers maiden name - Richards

Maybe they knew the father's surname.

I cannot find a birth reg. for a Jane Brees/Breeze with mmn Richards on GRO indexes
but there is this one where the mmn has been left blank

LH - I got my GRO ref from another site. I think it does look like her. I've checked baptisms - CofE and FreeReg but nothing there.

Sue - did Jane marry and, if so, what name did she give for father. It will probably be William Evans, I suppose  :-\

The 1851 has quite a few Mr  Brees in the Penegoes area. Elizabeth might have been away from ghome working though.

Interesting that on the 1881 census with William & Elizabeth Evans
their Evans children and Jane Breeze there is a
Winifred Richards 9 months noted as daughter

then on the 1891 census
She is noted  Winifred Winnie R Breese age 10 grandchild of William & Elizabeth Evans
Jane Brees/e/Breeze is not with them

and her birth reg. no mother's maiden name
