Eva Rachel Cripps or Hampson or Craig
« on: Friday 01 February 19 21:49 GMT (UK) »
Eva (or Evangeline) Rachel Cripps was born in Geelong in 1866, parents Sergeant-Major James Cripps and Sarah Jane Mahoney. At some point she married Reginald Sydney Hampson and they had four sons, all born in Victoria.

In 1904, in Waverley, NSW, Eva R Hampson married Alexander Doig Craig, born 13 June 1874 in Aberdeen. There was one daughter, Gertrude Jean, born 31 December 1905 in Parramatta.

On 6 October 1932 the following appeared in the In Memoriam section of the 'Sydney Morning Herald': In loving memory of my son, Lieutenant J T Hampson, MC (19th Battalion), died of wounds, Mont St Quentin, October 6, 1918. Behind shadows standeth God. Inserted by his loving mother, Eva Craig.

On 6 October 1933 the following appeared in the In Memoriam section of the 'Sydney Morning Herald': Hampson Lieutenant James MC, died of wounds at Mont St Quentin October 6 1918, son of the late Mrs Eva Craig of Burwood.

My notes tell me that Eva Cripps or Hampson or Craig died on 8 April 1933 at 68 Park Street, West Brunswick, NSW, but I don't know where that came from and I would like to verify it.

However I cannot find anything in Trove to substantiate it, and I cannot even find a death record in the NSW online deaths index.

Can anyone suggest anywhere else to look for her death?

I'm not too concerned with the Hampsons, because it's her second husband Alexander Doig Craig who is my relative, but it's puzzling and annoying not to be able to dot this i and cross this t.

Thank you, cupoflife. That web site was my starting point.

I never trust anything I find online unless it is an image of an original document, so I set out to verify that information. In the process I have amassed a lot of additional information, which I will pass on to Ken Doig in the fullness of time.

I am still at a loss to understand why not one of these newspaper announcements originally came up on Trove in a search for Eva Craig in 1933.

Thank you for that, jonw65. Interesting that although she made her son-in-law an executor, she didn't mention her daughter in her will.
