WW1? Bill & Mary Jones
« on: Saturday 02 February 19 10:56 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
May I ask if someone might enhance/clean up an old photo please. One of the couples I have been told are my grandparents Bill & Mary Jones. No idea where the photo was taken, its reverse is a post card.

For what it is worth, he is a sergeant in the Royal Artillery. The Sergeant Major sitting on the right of the pic has the Military Medal.  Neither are wearing WW1 campaign medal ribbons which dates it to the latter stages of the war or immediately afterwards 1919 ish.

If you have his full forename(s) and date/place of birth, his records may be to be found (may because 60% of them did not survive bombing in WW2).

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

Closer look at the shoulder titles on the right, I read RFA, not RGA (no curve in the centre one), not RHA (not enough uprights in the centre) and not RA there are three letters.

So Royal Field Artillery - only 858 batteries (Farndale) to choose from!

As MaxD says the later stages of the war. The women are dressed typically 1916-19.
I also notice they are wearing the same coats so it's possible they are sisters as this was quite common.
As for finding a Bill Jones RFA I'll leave that to MaxD.

A try from me. Tough to get the lad in the middle looking normal(ish)....but hope he looks ok. Didn't colour it but will do so if you want another version.
Restorers : Please do not use my restorations without asking my permission first. Thanks.

Good quality size scans will mean much better restores >> hint hint :-)

Gentlemen, What can I say, these restorations of the old photograph are great, so much better than the original. They look so vastly different from just being lightened/brightened up I am sure you will agree.
Many Thanks to you both Andypandy & MartynS for your work. I am very appreciative.
Thank you also MaxD and Jim1 for your comments regarding the Sgt Major on the right and the time of the ladies coats. They may be sisters but as all my previous ancestors have departed, I have no way of clarifying that important point.
I do have my Grandfathers Army Record, thankfully not destroyed as he was in WW2 but Thank you for the suggestion.
Best Regards, Jim
