Confirmation of Names in John Allen's Will
« on: Saturday 02 February 19 13:50 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Would someone be able to double check the first names shown in the attached extract from the 1660 Will of John Allen of Tugby.

In the second line he mentions his wife whose name looks like "Alice" [or perhaps "Alise"

In the third line he mentions his daughter whose name looks like "Marie"

I'm pretty certain on Marie's name but would be grateful if anyone could confirm the name of John's wife for me.

Thanks
Matt

Yes, that's Alice.  A "c" was written like a modern "r", and the "e" on the end has got a bit elongated, but basically is the same letter as the "e" in Allen

I'd agree with Prawn Cocktail - 'Alice'
And yes, it's 'Marie'.

Both got those 'backwards' 'e's at the end - and looks as if they were written in a hurry! - they are both very loosely formed.

Thanks for both those confirmations. I was pretty sure I had read the names correctly but wanted to double check.

"Marie" was likely just a spelling of Mary - there was probably no distinction between the spelling or pronunciation of this name at that time.

That's how I've always read it. I've seen one ancestor christened "Mary" and buried as "Marie" a weeks later. In another case I've seen the name as "Marye" too.
