Thomas Phillips Sparrowhawk b.1815 - death after 1861 - help!
« on: Saturday 02 February 19 20:56 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

My 3xGt Grandfather was Thomas Phillips Sparrowhawk. He was born 22nd May 1815 and was baptised on 25th December 1815 at Southwark St Saviour.  He married Elizabeth Vallender on 22nd April 1845 at St Mary Newington.  He was widowed in 1865.  Elizabeth died at 40 Henry Street, Southwark.

I have looked for many years for a death of Thomas, or any evidence of him after 1861.  There is a Thomas Sparrowhawk, boarder, born Southwark, listed as born 1829 in 1871, but I am unsure as to whether this is a valid person.

If anyone can shed any light on Thomas, I'd be very grateful!

Many thanks,

Emma

That 1871 boarder looks to me to be age 4.

Might be this birth?

SPARROWHAWK, THOMAS       PAVIOR     Order
GRO Reference: 1868  D Quarter in ST GEORGE SOUTHWARK  Volume 01D  Page 146

Can we account for him elsewhere?

Another child

SPARROWHAWK, ELIZABETH       PAVIOR     Order
GRO Reference: 1871  M Quarter in SAINT SAVIOUR SURREY  Volume 01D  Page 36

Cannot see a marriage

SPARROWHAWK, GEORGE       PAVIOUR     Order
GRO Reference: 1880  S Quarter in SAINT SAVIOUR SURREY  Volume 01D  Page 32

In 1881 a family that accounts for these three children plus others have parents Thomas and Caroline. Both age 32, Thomas b Bermondsey

Still don’t see a marriage for them though.

I don’t see them in 1871, or any other 4 yr old Thomas

Your Thomas born 1815 had a daughter Ann Maria who married in 1878?  If so Thomas is noted as deceased on that certificate which, if correct, narrows it down somewhat.

On daughter Eliza marriage in 1866 he is described as a hatter.

There's a Thomas J Sparrowhawk age 67 who dies in 1875 St Geo East  :-\

Do you know where his wife is buried - if she has a headstone he could be mentioned on there.

Maybe 94 Preson Street. I think it’s a P, could be an R

Thank you all for having a search.

Thomas Alfred Sparrowhawk (b. 1848, son of Thomas Phillips Sparrowhawk) 'married' Caroline Paviour (lots of various spellings in the records!) - I am still to find them.

The criminal register, I believe, relates to Thomas Alfred.  They had middle names, but were reluctant to use them.

I cannot find Thomas Alfred and Caroline in 1871 either.  They should have had children Thomas (candidate for the boarder), Henry (no birth record for him, although Thomas is listed as Father on his marriage certificate) and Elizabeth, who was born in Q March 1871.
