Travelling Teachers for Farmers' children in 18/19c
« on: Saturday 02 February 19 22:41 GMT (UK) »
Some time ago I read an article referring to education of children living on isolated hill farm steadings in The Scottish Borders. A "Dominie" or master would spend a few weeks at each farm teaching children from one or more families the move on to another. He had free board and lodgings during his stay. This was before free education. There was a special term in use for this custom/ profession which I have now forgotten. It sounded archaic, almost Old English, and of course is no longer used. I would love to remember the word! Can anyone enlighten me?
