The John McArthurs of Lochwinnoch, ,
« on: Sunday 03 February 19 01:08 GMT (UK) »
Hello, I am brand new to Roots chat, and I am trying to find any info on John McArthur and his family .
He was born in August of 1810, and immigrated to USA in 1848 on the "Ann Harley" (Glasgow to NYC)
He traveled with his wife, Isabella Campbell, and their four children.

I have been unable to find any info on their life in Scotland, marriage, parents, etc.  If anyone has any info on them , I would be very happy. Thanks , Bert

Hi folks, I am new to Roots chat and i am researching the John McArthur family of Lochwinnoch, Scotland.  He was born in 1813, and was married to Isabella Campbell, also of Lochwinnoch.
He left Scotland on the "Ann Harley" ( Glasgow to NYC) with his family in 1848
He traveled with his four sons,  George, Robert, John jr, and William.
I have no info on his life in Scotland ,(his parents, his occupation, his marriage date and place..)
If any one has info on his life there, i would really appreciate it.
            thanks in advance,  Bert

Hi Bertsbees, and welcome to RootsChat:)

The available information to start you off is all at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, which is pay-per-view but modestly priced.

Unfortunately at that time there are significant gaps in the surviving records, and many baptism and marriage records have not survived.

There are baptisms of three children of John McArthur and Isabella Campbell
George 28 September 1834
Robert 22 October 1837
Mary 5 April 1847
all in Lochwinnoch, but so far I have failed to find the baptisms of John Jr or William, or the marriage, and I have yet to find the family in the 1841 census.

The original baptism records may tell you his occupation and where in the parish they lived, and if the names of witnesses are listed there may be clues to his parents' names.

I presume that you have 'calculated' his year of birth from his age in a US census, so 1813 is approximate rather than exact. Also that you have found immigration or naturalisation documents that tell you that they were from Lochwinnoch?
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Records on https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk a pay to view site for all records in Scotland.

Despite the date I think this might be John below.

MCARTHUR JOHN   GEORGE MCARTHUR/CHRISTIAN ORR    27/09/1809   Lochwinnoch

This is likely to be the marriage.
CAMPBEL   ISABELLA   JOHN MCAITKEN/   22/11/1833   Lochwinnoch

There are records for two of the children at Lochwinnoch
MCARTHUR   GEORGE   JOHN MCARTHUR/ISABELLA CAMPBELL       28/09/1834
MCARTHUR   ROBERT   JOHN MCARTHUR/ISABELLA CAMPBELL       22/10/1837

Colin
Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

Welcome from me too  :)

This looks like the family in 1841. Everyone showing as born outside of the county of Lanarkshire:

John Macarthur 30 cotton spinner
Isabella Macarthur 30
George Macarthur 5
Robert Macarthur 3

Address: George Street, Barony Lanarkshire

Possible clues for John's parents. I can see one couple having children at the right time in Lochwinnoch, a George McArthur and Christian/ina Orr. They show as married or their banns on 6 December 1806 in Lochwinnoch. Two children for this couple in the Old Parish Registers (OPRs). These are all available to view online on Scotlands People, as mentioned by Forfarian above:

Robert b. 24 October 1811 Lochwinnoch, Renfrew
Katharine b. 17 January 1816 Lochwinnoch, Renfrew

Sometimes you get clues to maternal/paternal grandparents' names if a couple used Scottish naming pattern in some form (lots of links on this online. One here www.halmyre.abel.co.uk/Family/naming.htm).

Some more births for this couple from SP. All entries recorded in the Lochwinnoch OPRs:

Christian b. 1808
John b. 1809 - would fit better potentially given his age on the 1841 census?
Agnes b. 1818
Catherine b. 1822  - first Katherine must have died young?
Archibald b. 1825

Something to work from hopefully.

thank you all for your response to my first post,   love it!
Monica, when John landed in US, his first job was working at a carpet mill as a carder ( someone who untangles the raw wool for carpets) , so him working in the textile factory in the 1841 census is spot on.
Forfarian, according to my research , John jr was born sometime in 1841( so might have missed the 1841 census) and William wasnt born until app.1845.  Mary didnt travel with them, so maybe didnt survive :-((.  By any chance did it say the church where they were baptised?
Colin, The date you found for their marriage sounds right,  Does it mention where they were married?
After moving to the States, John and his sons set up a quite successful paper mill in Newton, CT.USA
Once again I appreciate all your help,  as a "newbee" on Roots Chat, I am very happy .. Cheers!

Monica, thanks for the Scottish name pattern link.....After moving to Connecticut, his first wife.Isabella, died. He remarried and he named his youngest son Archibald  ( probably after one of his brothers).
Ive got alot to process, after my search into my families roots.   This info from the Scottish side helps so much.  Once again thanks so much, and if any thing else surfaces, Id love to hear from you all,
       Bert
ps, I double checked and on John's tombstone he has his birth as 1810.
