If as you mentioned he was in the RAF he probably would not be on the 1939 register as it was for Civilians only

Ah, good shout.

I didn't know that. But it's corroborative info in a way.

The purpose of the register was to issue ration cards to civilians. It was used after the war up until the  1990's by the NHS, that is why you get amendments to womens surnames on it if they married after 1939.

I was wondering about the crossings out with dates beyond 1939 even though I inferred it was due to marriage.

p.s. maybe that could be a reason why the 'other' George E. Greenwood (b. Luton) isn't on either.

The register was taken on 29 September 1939.

If he was born December qtr 1921 he was probably still at home, he was only just turned 18 at the start of war.  As already mentioned there are 2 blacked out entries after the parents

The register was also used for conscription sodoubtful that he would have joined up already
