LNW railway uniforms and the significance of chevrons

A relative has  given me a photo of a gentleman in a L and NW uniform. I would like to learn more about the man and also what the chevrons on his uniform signify. Further information at

Hi.

With reference to the uniform, you could try the LNWR society http://www.lnwrs.org.uk

They may also be able to tell you what employee records exist and where they are. Some railway records were held at Kew but they may have gone to the national railway museum at York

As a rule of thumb, stripes and chevrons tend to represent either good conduct, or years of service , or rank. Each organisation throughout the world would do these things differently, so you would really have to go to them (or their successors), to find out what they were trying to denote.

The Army used a similar system of chevrons for good conduct/service so I would imagine this is along the same lines.
The photo is 1880's/90's can't give a better date without seeing the back.

Thank you. I was reading about service and good conduct chevrons at the weekend and had wondered if this is what they were.

The book LNWR miscellany published by opc has a photo of an lnwr station showing the stationmaster stood on the platform

The photo is dated about 1880 and refers to the pillbox hat of the period, photos dated around 1900 show employees wearing peaked caps.

The stationmaster shewn is wearing a uniform identical to the one in your picture, even down to the length of the jacket.

Other photos sowing engine crew and other employees have no similar uniform, but I suspect that passenger guards have a similar one.

Sorry I have no confirmed facts, despite having an extensive railway library.

The parsimonious LNWR would not have wasted money on good conduct stripes ;D ;D ;D
