Arbuckle(s) Crumlin, Antrim County

As I understand it, locating birth records before 1864 is very difficult. I find there are alot of Arbuckle(s) families. 

I am looking for the parents and siblings of my Great Grandfather Andrew Arbuckle - what facts I know.  Andrew was born Jan 1, 1858 in Crumlin, Antrim County, he was one of 10 children.  He stated in a newspaper article that his father was a prominent farmer.  The US census I have found Andrew in states his father was born in Scotland, and his mother was born in Ireland.  I have picutres of his parents but no names. It was our understanding he was one of the youngest males and there for would not have anything to inherit.  He came to New York in 1879.  He had 4 Children Edward Walsh (named after wive's grandfather) , Edith , and Clara Belle, and another son named Albert James who is my grandfather.
Andrew lived to the age 100 years and 8 mo.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You've posted in Completed requests so a moderator will be moving your topic to the main ANTRIM board 

Civil registration of births started in 1864 so before that date you need to see if you can find a baptism record. Not all church records survive but of those that do not all are online.

A few things you'll find in researching Ulster ancestors which can send you off in the wrong direction-
1) place of origin- in Ulster-Scots families Scotland may often be listed as a place of birth and it could be that the person was born in Scotland (families travelled back & forth so not uncommon for a couple to have children born in both places over a period of years OR that they were born in Ireland but their ancestors were Scottish
2) in farming families it wasn't always the eldest son who stayed on the home farm- sometimes it was the youngest son who stayed as the older ones went away. For example, if the eldest son was born when father was 25 by the time he was an adult & ready to start his own family the father was still active and there could be lots of younger siblings. Then, by the time a youngest son was born a father might be in late 40s or 50s so this son would be ready to take on more work as the father got older (or had even died).

Now, to the Arbuckles. When and where did Andrew get married? If in the U.S. does marriage certificate gives names of both parents? what about his death certificate?

You said he had 4 children but I count 5 in 1910 although wife said 4 children-

Poughkeepsie Eagle-News, 19 Nov.1930: Mr. and Mrs. Arbuckle Celebrate Anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Arbuckle of 21 Randolph Avenue celebrated their 40th weddlng anniversary Monday evening at a dinner at their home. The couple have lived in Pourhkeepsie for the past 20 years.

You've also at least one online tree (not sure how up-to-date) which lists date of marriage but no parents. Do you have the 1890 marriage certificate?

Thank you for the information.  To date I have not located the marriage certificate or death certificate. 

I located newspaper articles one, an interview done before Andrew turned 100.  The other was his death notice.  Yes, I have a young son called Charles A. but I believe he may have died, as no one in the family ever mentioned him.  Edward Walsh Arbuckle was named for his mother's grandfather.  Because of that I have often wondered if the names Edith and Clara ( Claire), have anything to do with Andrew's family,  just a guess.

I had met all of them except my grandfather Albert James.  So I have often thought that possible James was the name of Andrew's father or grandfather. 

Still researching and trying to locate possible Arbuckle connections through DNA matches.

There is another James Arbuckle who was resident in the townland of Ballynadrentagh in the 1901 census of Ireland:-

This James was the owner of a large farm in Ballynadrentagh, as per Griffiths valuation:-

Ballynadrentagh is just north of Crumlin.

A James Arbuckle was one of the witnesses at the marriage of my great great grandfather, James McClurg in 1855 in Lylehill Presbyterian church.  The McClurg surname is intimately connected with the townland of Ballynadrentagh.  A James and Ann Arbuckle were also the witnesses at another James McClurg marriage in 1852 in Lisburn registry office.  (Not the same James McClurg).  The bride was Margaret Arbuckle and her father's name was William Arbuckle.  I have not been able to trace a marriage for James and Ann Arbuckle.  My guess is they married just before registration began in 1845.  There is also a baptism of an Alexander Arbuckle in 1864 in Killead Church of Ireland baptismal register.  Father stated as James Arbuckle of Ballynadrentagh and mother stated as Ann.

If as you say there were a lot of children in the Arbuckle line, it should not be difficult to work out which line is yours.

                      MyHeritage has Irish records available to search for free through the 20th.  I am not sure, but I think this record is the James and Ann you mentioned.  Jame's father was William, and I have a feeling Margaret was Jame's sister.  Ann's maiden name was Graham, and her father was  Andrew.   Now if I can locate a birth record, I will be happy, however my Andrew was born in 1858 before birth's were recorded.  So I have to rely on church records.  You have truly given me a place to focus on.
