John McEwan and Agnes Buchanan, New Monkland
« on: Monday 04 February 19 11:38 GMT (UK) »
I’d appreciate any help with information regarding John McEwan and Agnes Buchanan and families of New Monkland. The only information which I have so far is a son also called John McEwan b.5th June 1810 who married a Janet Irvine born 22nd Mar.1812. Possible siblings of John.
Elisabeth b.29th Mar. 2nd 1807, James b. 5th Feb.1815, Agnes? and William Buchanan McEwan b.7th June 1835. All born in New Monkland.

"John McEwan and Agnes Buchanan

Elisabeth b 1807
John McEwan b 1810
James b 1815,
Agnes?
A gap then...
William Buchanan McEwan b.7th June 1835

There's a big gap & William Buchanan seems to be the son of a possible 2nd marriage or different couple?

Edit...I see he's the grandson of John & Agnes.

Which of the children of John & Agnes do you descend from?

This is more likely your William (no middle name)?

Hmmm. John McEwan married Janet Irvine in New Monkland in January 1829. If John is the son of your John and Agnes, he was only 18 or perhaps barely 19 when he married, which is unusually young for that time.

There's quite a gap between the marriage and the baptism of William Buchanan McEwan, and I have not found them in he 1841 census. Maybe there were other children whose baptism records have not survived.

My Grandfather was William McEwan b. 1866, Bothwell. His parents were John McEwan b.1829, New Monkland and Jane Blackwood b. 1835, Dalserf.

I take it that you have the marriage certificate of John McEwan and Jane Blackwood, and that this is where you got the names of John's parents from? What else does it say?

Ah.

My reason for asking is that it's an 1855 marriage certificate. Like 1855 birth and death certificates, 1855 marriages contain some extra information not included in any other year. The one I am thinking of is that it often gives the couple's dates and places of birth.

Also, all certificates tell you whether or not the parents of the child/couple/deceased were deceased. If the 1855 certificate does not say that John's parents were deceased, there should be death certificates for them, which will confirm the names of their parents.
