Hi There: Looking for any help in tracing my lineage: I am fairly sure my grandfather James Holcroft (d. 1917) lived in Marsh Street Warrington, married to Elizabeth Ann née Shuttleworth but am interested in his siblings and parents - I recently found out I have hitherto unknown relatives in Warrington from my father James' first marriage in 1936 (to Gladys Bradshaw) and would like to go further back to his grand- and great-grandparents if possible - thanks for any help! James Holcroft, died December quarter 1918 - aged 45 - registered Warrington.

Possible 1881 census - RG11/3797 folio 93 page 14

John Holcroft - 62 - widower - Rope Maker
John Holcroft - 31 - rope maker (son)
Ellen Holcroft - 29
James - 8
Mary - 5
Florence 3
Maria - 1

Wrong family, I think

OK - How sad - they were only married less that 2 years
the marriage certificate in 1915 states
James Holcroft to Annie Shuttleworth mar qtr 1915 - there is NO DEATH 1917 for James Holcroft on www.freebmd.org.uk - did he die in WW1 ?

Hi All, and thanks for the replies so far: my grandad was Pvte. James Holcroft, service number 201800, died 1st August 1917 at Passchendaele, with the 1st/4th South Lancs. He was born in 1889 and yes, married to Annie who died in 1953. My father - their son, also James - was born 8th August 1915: The 1st/4th left for France in January 1915 so he was probably conceived during embarkation leave in December 1914 :) . Primarily looking for any siblings and James senior's parentage....My dad made occasional mention of an uncle Ham, who I presume was Hamblett Holcroft, but I'm not sure whether he was a real uncle or just somehow related.

John Holcroft and Ellen Chadwick appear on the same page - Marriages - Warrington - December quarter 1872

Birth registration - James Holcroft - June quarter 1873 - Warrington.  GRO give mmn as Chadwick

looks very likely - Tryan Holcroft should be easy to find ...
added if it is him - TRYAL and Sarah had 9 children - only one - James - says Tryan - all the rest say Tryal
