Thomas Heviley or Everley, 1881 Census in Gloucester area or Bristol
« on: Monday 04 February 19 19:10 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for a 1881 census entry for one of my great grandfathers, Thomas Heviley (nee Everley), born Oldbury, Worcs 1862, who was a journeyman boiler maker. In the 1871C, he was still in Oldbury but by 1888 he is in Gloucester, and by 1891 in Bristol. There is also evidence he was in Bath in 1886-7. As far as I know, he was not married and was probably lodging and/or living away from his family.

I would appreciate any help tracking him down for 1881.

In anticipation many thanks and best wishes

John

Many thanks, Kay. That was quick.

I purposely mentioned journeyman to suggest he travelled a bit plus my grandmother (his daughter) told me he moved about the country a great deal - but I did not expect him to have travelled this distance to find work! Still, you have found him with another guy of the same age also from Oldbury, William Ayres. I don't know of any family connection with Ayres. Nonetheless, the folks in Emanuel Street, Stockton work at an ironworks, which would fit Thomas' subsequent trade. Moreover, this Thomas is listed as a riveter, which was a skill related to boilermaking. So, if this is my guy, he has somehow got a break that has sent him almost 200 miles north to Stockton.

It's also probably that the Geordie/Yorkshire enumerator interpreted Thomas' Brummie accent as "Eavley", which is what the enumerator wrote down.

So, I'm inclined to go with your find. Many many thanks.

Best wishes

John

My x Grandad (same era as Thomas) was a Boiler Maker (Journeyman) for the Great Western Railways - and children were born in  - Wiltshire, Chatham and my Grandad, Bristol etc. etc. and x Grandad  eventually worked South America.

Possibly Thomas also worked for the Railways. Bristol/Bath was the GWR.

Some Railways records are on Ancestry - (mostly Staff)  The National Archives hold railway records.

If your family is the one on the 1911 census, with Thomas HEVILEY aged 49, born Oldbury, Staffs and Sarah Augusta his Wife born Lyneham, Wiltshire (other census born CLACK)....

I would say, Thomas was a railway worker.

Many years ago, in our family tree, we have a family from Lyneham, Wiltshire - sometimes it says they came from Clack.  I have a letter written in 1993, from a Researcher in Bradenstoke,  - which states Clack is the 'old' name for Bradenstoke.

Thanks for your message, Capetown.

Yes, I agree, guys like Thomas Heviley moved around quite a bit in the 19thC as manufacturing industry boomed in Britain. He may have worked for the the railways at some point, which obviously relates to him being a boilermaker. I also know that he did a lot of work for the chemical industry in Widnes and St. Helens, Lancs, at which points he was freelance

I'm a tad puzzled by your 1911 Census entry and "CLACK". The 1911C I have is of him and "wife" Sarah Augusta in Garston (Liverpool), Lancs with no mention of "CLACK". Have you found a 1911 census entry for them elsewhere?

Kindly advise

Many thanks

Best

John
