Codes used in New York State Death Records???

I'm looking at the New York, Death Index for 1852-1956 regarding the death of a Catherine F McMillan.

It says that her place of death is K15687 and her cause of death is 974.

Does anyone know where to find an explanation of these codes or better yet know what these codes mean

 Mrs. Catherine McMillan, 33, hanged herself with a dress belt in a clothes closet at the Harriet Judson YWCA Branch, Nevins and Schermerhorn Sts, Brooklyn, yesterday. Police notified her husband  Wallace, an oil company employee, at their home, 211 Eastland Ave., Pelham

She's on the New York City death index, and the certificate number was 15687.  The borough listed before the certificate number was K (Kings County, aka Brooklyn), so I think that accounts for the K15687 in the New York State death index.  Perhaps, because she lived outside of New York City, the death certificate was listed on both indexes.

E974 Suicide and self-inflicted injury by hanging and strangulation

Catherine was born in 1906 so her age is bit off.
