EILEEN SIMMONDS Daughter lookup request
« on: Tuesday 05 February 19 14:27 GMT (UK) »
Hi there,

I'm looking for the Sister of my Grandmother 'Eileen Simmonds'.

She was born Eileen Simmonds, Mother's maiden name 'Nolan', in Salford, Lancashire in 1914.
Vol 8d, Page 211.

She moved to Ireland to live with her Sister Frances Beatrice Simmonds. Whilst there we believe she got pregnant, had the baby and fled leaving the baby with her Sister (my Dad's Mother, Frances Beatrice Simmonds). This could be my Father getting the story wrong as the baby may have been born in the UK. However, Frances brought the baby girl, also called Eileen, up in Ireland. My Dad seems to think she brought her up until she was about 8 years old. Eileen senior arrived back in Ireland having recently been married and took Eileen junior away (where I don't know).

Eileen senior married Sidney Hancock in 1933 and Ian Stewart in 1942.

Any help would be very gratefully received, many thanks in advance.

Francesca.

Looking for a death for her do you mean?  If she was born 1914 it's unlikely she will still be around -
or do you mean her daughter you are looking for?  If she is likely to still be alive I'm afraid we aren't allowed to discuss living persons here  :)

Question seems to have been much altered? Or is it my imagination?

Francesca,

Have you checked any resources?

Free BMD and Lancashire BMD shows the Hancock/Simmonds marriage in 1933 in Manchester.
There is a likely male birth in the same year.

Eileen would be 19yrs old if she were born in 1914.

It looks as though Eileen might be with Ian Stewart in 1939 before her marriage in 1942.

This would give the female child’s birth pre 1933 or 1934-1939 do you think?

There is a death in 1959 for an Eileen Stewart b 1914 and a burial recorded in what seems to be a public grave in Philips Park cemetery, Catholic section.

Thank you @heywood

Yes, that would make sense for a male to have been born that same year as the 1933 marriage. The son born to that marriage had no idea he had a half Sister.

Yes I would say this would put Eileen junior as being born pre 1933.

I'm aware that we cannot discuss living people and totally understand. I doubt Eileen junior would still be alive today.

I'd really appreciate help with how I can search for an illegitimate child? Who could potentially have been born in Lancashire or Ireland? I'm putting in Eileen's surname 'Simmonds' in the Mother's name and Child's name and nothing is coming up. I've searched FreeBMD and couldn't find anything.

Not sure if I'm searching that correctly or not.

Could the child have been registered with your grandmothers married name as its surname?

Which was?

Following on  from your other post,

What about this one from the June 1/4 1928

Raby    Eileen    Raby    Leeds    9b   671
Mind you awfully young for Eileen senior if it is,

Strike that, there’s a double entry, McDermott.

That's very interesting as Eileen Simmonds' Father was Thomas Simmonds (he changed his name from Raby!) His Father was Isaac Raby and when Isaac passed away his Mother Frances went back to her maiden name 'Simmonds' as did Thomas. Thomas even quoted his Father on his birth certificate as being 'William Simmonds' deceased. Had Thomas not changed his name, Eileen would have been born 'Raby'.

This family seemed to very much put it out there that they were not Jewish quoting themselves as 'pig dealers and pork butchers'.

Thanks so much for finding the record! Could the Eileen junior have been born Raby then? I'm not sure what a double entry means sorry.

On Free BMD

Births Jun 1928   (>99%)
Barber    Marjorie C    Barber    Leeds    9b   671     click to viewAssociated System Entry related to this entry - click for more information
Goldstone    Marjorie C    Barber    Leeds    9b   671      click to viewAssociated System Entry related to this entry - click for more information
McDermott    Eileen    Raby    Leeds    9b   671
Norfolk    Bernard    Flathers    Leeds    9b   671
Norfolk    Francis    Flathers    Leeds    9b   671
Podhorzer    Elaine    Labovitch    Leeds    9b   671
Raby    Eileen    Raby    Leeds    9b   671

By double entry I mean I think the same birth has been registered / recorded under both names.
I think it’s a red herring.  Eileen senior would have only been 14 or maybe 15, which obviously is not unheard of, but seems unlikely.

added

Maybe this is the eventual McDermott Raby marriage?   And the McDermott reg is a legitimis8ng registration

Marriages Mar 1934   (>99%)

McDermott    John    Raby    Leeds North    9b   554

Raby    Greta    McDermott    Leeds North    9b   554

I would ignore this as a complete red herring, sorry  :)

I’ve been looking in the newspapers to see what Isaac did to make them ditch the Raby surname. Can’t see anything.
