SUDELL - 2/5th Kings own, Royal Lancaster Regiment

I'm trying to find records for Private 4880 SUDELL of the 2/5th Kings own, Royal Lancaster Regiment.

Hitting brick walls with this.  Any help gratefully received.

The surname and number do not register on either of the subscription sites that have records or at the National Archives.  That tends to indicate someone whose record is lost in WW2 and who did not serve overseas.

Do you have a forename and where did the number and battalion come from in the first instance?

The details come from a letter he wrote home in 1917 from the trenches in France.
He is either JR or TRSudell
The service number & regiment are again from his letter.

There is a Thomas Rowland Sudell of the 2/5 King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment, but his Service No was 242244

In all likelihood, this is the man.  242244 was in the 1917 renumbering for the KORL.  He probably began with 4880 and at the time of the letter, had not yet been renumbered.  Usually, if he went overseas with it, his first number would be on his medal card but exceptions to the rules abound!

I'd go for him given the unusual name and the battalion.  That said, only the medal card exists.
