more information would be good
« on: Wednesday 06 February 19 14:43 GMT (UK) »
I have a sad death of a distant cousin

5.09.1944  RSM A.W. HACKETT
I cannot find any other military details?
now he was born in Leicester in 1908

baptised as Alfred William and then carried on life as William Alfred.. :) :)  which sure helps.

I have his grave marker at Gilroes from Find a grave and I know his marriage to Florence Patrick

he did have a son but   not a lot found for him as yet..

However his military information is what I am actually asking for help with.  I have got Fold 3 etc.. but cannot fathom  it keeps taking me to USA and Seamen.. so I am not good with that..

would be great if anyone can help  ;) :D

There is very little data online for WW2 servicemen. His records will still be with MoD (you can apply for a copy but it will cost you £30).

He was Royal Artillery, service number 882845. https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/2718935/hackett,-alfred-william/

There is a very brief record of his attestation in 1938 on FindMyPast.  It looks like he was discharged from the army on 14 December 1942, being no longer physically fit for service.

Okay

 marries in 1928

so must re-enlist to die in 1944

it is the correct parents so it is him??

and then TWO sons --???

Well his wife goes off to Canada and marries again after the war ... sooo  what she does with the sons or if they are still around will go and check...

:)

brilliant help thank you

There is an earlier enlistment in the RA of a man by that name with mother A L Repton St Leicester.  His age given as 1905/06.  Served only 10 months in the TA Feb to Dec 1924  Coincidence?
