Thanks  ;)

Could be Bricklayer (and the Labourer is written in a different hand presumably for categorising him for the records).

Or as Gadget said, it could be Bricklayer's Labourer.

(I think it is the first one.)

My doubt is the possible double l in layer(s). I can't think what else it can be though.

Is it a looped 'l' that's lost its top?

Steve - if you can tell us the reference for this, someone might be able to take a look on a different site to the one you used. There's usually Ancestry, FindMyPast, The Genealogist and FamilySearch to choose from, and I've sometimes found that one site's images are clearer than another's.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

:) Thanks, peeps. Walks like a duck, doesn't it? I thought Brickies Lab too. And, it fits the sort of guy he was too.

Never hurts to get the consensus though  8)

Thanks.
