John Baptiste LOMBARDINI- Huddersfield
« on: Thursday 07 February 19 05:46 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

Trying to piece a connection between my ancestor William Lombardini and a possible brother in John Baptiste Lombardini. The marriage certificate of John Baptiste is what I'm looking for to establish a father's name.

Just a few details about John.
He was born in Switzerland in approx. 1785 and died in Huddersfield in Jan 1856.
He was a carver and gilder by trade and appeared a lot in the Huddersfield directory and newspaper.
He married Mary Sutcliffe in 1836.

If there is a father's name mentioned or found, that would be awesome!

Thank you for your time and efforts,
EB

1836 was before civil registration so no fathers name mentioned when they married Huddersfield 27 October 1836.

They did marry by license, should the license application still exist you might get clues from that.

ADDED William was living with him in 1841 census of Huddersfield, William listed as age 35 and John 45  ages being rounded. Both born Foreign Parts.

Thanks for your quick response.
How would I go about finding the license application?

John and Mary had a daughter Maria Victoria born 23 May 1837 William Lombardini is listed as the godfather.
Non Conformist Registers St Patricks Cathedral Huddersfield  Catholic.

Surely living with him in 1841 and being the godfather of their first child would indicate a family connection.

Marriage Licenses if they survive are often at your local record/archive office.

I found the marriage on ancestry they married at St. Patrick's Cathedral so you could ask the church
if they retained items like these or have other records that might be useful.

The "Suthers" family are also connected or are very good friends. The Godmother of Maria the eldest daughter was Mary Suthers and the witnesses to the marriage of John and Mary are William Suthers and M could be Mrs. Suthers.

The priest was a John Fitzpatrick did he keep his own personal records of events he officiated?

Thanks so much for your time and help,

I had no idea that William was the godfather, this is awesome information.
I’ll go check with St Patrick’s to see if they have any surviving.

Thank you once again!

St. Patrick's.

While you make enquiries at the local record or archive office about the marriage license find out if John Lombardini left a will, he died between 1851 and 1861 census. He may name his  male relative as executor.

The Bond and/or Allegation for this marriage have survived.  They are housed at the Borthwick Institute in York - https://www.york.ac.uk/borthwick/

Added:  order form -  http://www.york.ac.uk/borthwick/remote-services/copying/order-form

There is no evidence that he made a will.  Again records are housed at the Borthwick.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

I googled John Baptiste Lombardini and found a long article about him on a site called Huddersfield Exposed. Googling William produced bankruptcy notices in the London Gazette.
