Sweetwater Wyoming.
« on: Thursday 07 February 19 09:26 GMT (UK) »
Researching a great uncle, I find he went to Wyoming in 1920 and settled there, it seems he continued the 'family occupation' of coal-miner.  Could anyone give me any background to the area, it seems that people from many different places went there at about that time - how would he know where to go find work?  Any information would really be appreciated.  ( on his WW11 Draft Reg Card he states his employer as U P Coal Co Rock Springs).  Thank you Elizabeth.

Google "sweetwater wy  U.P. coal company" for more.

How did he know where to find work? That depends on where he was before he was there and who he knew there before he got there.
And I think companies recruited overseas, but I don't remember where I saw that and it is too vague to start searching for.
Try Googling "Sweetwater Wyoming" "Coal" "Union Pacific" "recruit" "your great uncle's home town/country", -- various combinations and you might find something specific.

or Rock Springs or other locations in the county.

thank you for that lead - Clemont lived in County Durham England, before going to the USA - it is a mining village and many of his relatives, neighbours, friends etc were miners. I now have something to tackle.   Elizabeth.

Interesting, then maybe Union Pacific or another company in Wyoming recruited miners from his home town. I'm sure it's "Googleable" - at least the general practice of recruiting workers overseas.

Is Clement's surname Bird by any chance? I have a Clement Bird in my family tree (second cousin twice removed and related to my Little line) who was born in Eldon, County Durham and who died in Sweetwater, Wyoming.

Cheers
