I cannot look at the moment but there are births for Emerson/Emmerson  with motherís maiden surname Angel after 1871/1881 and I cannot see another marriage that would fit.  I think that family were in Brighton in 1881, are they related as they were born Slough area

Yes the Maiden Name was Angel and she died in 1880. The information that I have been using comes from a family bible so maybe there was a handwritten error. Her Mum was also Mary Angel and records from most of my family tree relate to Slough. Maybe I need to look at online records again as I'm now totally confused!!  ;D

Sorry I got sidetracked from your original question.  I must admit I was confused too having found more Emerson/Angel births than you mentioned  :)  That 1880 death record would tie in with the 1881 census.

1881 - RG11/908 f34 p64
Bradbourne Road, Sevenoaks, Kent
Matthew Emerson - Widower-age38-occ Joiner bn Slough
Isabel -Dtr- age 12 - bn Slough
Frank - Son -10 bn Slough
Harry Emerson   Son   age 8 bn Bournemouth, Hampshire
Arthur Emerson   Son   age 4 bn Bournemouth, Hampshire

..........

It is this family that are also registering births with mothers maiden surname Angel that confused me  ;D  I have now found their marriage which is not appearing on freebmd as the copy is poor and the numbers are not clear. -December qtr 1859 Eton reg district

1871 - RG10/1076 f13 p19 - Brighton
Albert Emerson -age 30 - bn Slough
Mary   Emerson   -age 30 - bn Cippenham, Bucks
Alfred Emerson   Son    - age 9 - bn Iver, Middlesex
Mathey Emerson Son   - age 7 - bn Uxbridge, Middlesex
Miriam Emerson   -age 2 - bn Slough

Thank you for doing that! I must admit that I haven't gone into it that much on Ancestry and just looked into the name and dates in the family bible.

Still curious about the Asylum and where the R.Albert one was and why it was so far away from where she (My Great Aunt) died. I guess that will be a history thing as to what happened when someone was taken to one (Or sectioned etc) I sadly don't have any family stories. The R.Albert in Lancaster was the only one for North England that was completely free and as they were very poor, maybe she got shipped off there duet o no room anywhere else!

Women were sometimes institutionalised after giving birth - Post natal depression was treated like a mental illness.

I wondered that too. So sad but also very interesting historically.

The Ancestry website gives access to asylum records online and you can see the books. My Great Aunt was listed as being admitted to the R.Albert but I have guessed at the R being for Royal and as for location, well that's the question  ::)

The asylums in Kent were all of different names to R.Albert. I also presumed that she was admitted to one near to where she lived and died.

Ermmm!  The Lunacy records show Mary's admission as Mary A Emmerson, and a death 16 June 1880.

There is a death registration - Houghton (Co Durham) - June quarter 1880 for Mary Ann Emmerson aged 14.  :-\

Could your Mary Emmerson be the death registered in December quarter 1880 - aged 37 - Sevenoaks.
 :-\

Just a thought
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
