Family tree viewing - mathematical?
« on: Thursday 07 February 19 17:16 GMT (UK) »
A long time ago (say 5 years), I read about a rather mathematical and counter intuitive way of viewing a family tree. It was very powerful - and was called something like a carpet or quilt.

And it was NOTHING like a normal way of viewing a tree.

I think somebody created a prototype plugin for the Gramps program to do it.

Can anybody help me remember what it was?

I've been throwing keywords at google for half an hour and coming up empty.

Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

I use GRAMPS.  It is called a quilt, and, while I like complex things, I have not yet got to grips with it. It isn't immediately intuitive.  There have been so many additions to GRAMPS lately. I love it.

James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

If I could come in. Does Gramps work on a Mac and can you import a Gedcom ?

Jksdelver, Windows and Linux, but I don't think Macs. Check here. It does import GEDCOM.

According to a note at the bottom of the Gramps wiki page, this feature is based on GeneaQuilts, which says it is a free program for all platforms:
