Abraham Mitchell
« on: Friday 08 February 19 18:49 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am really stuck with this family member Abraham Mitchell married a Elizabeth Colborne, they had a son William Henry Mitchell who married a Caroline McEwan 18 Sep 1874 at New Monkland, Scotland.

On William's Marriage certificate it lists his fathers occupation as a Police Constable
I am really struggling to find out anything about this family and would appreciate any help or tips on how to progress the reach for this brick wall that is driving me loopy

Constables I believe didn't serve in their home county but they did often marry a local girl and have their children there.
I don't know that the following is your Abraham but I doubt there was many Constables called Abraham Mitchell

Abraham Mitchell - I am Head Constable of Police I was stationed in Newry on 1st September last.
I'll add some more if I find them

Thanks Sinann

The reason i posted this in the Ireland section, as a long time ago i was advised that there was only one Abraham Mitchell when he conducted a search of the police records .  Unfortunately i lost the contact details so could not follow it up.

I do concur it is very unusual name, i also don't believe they only had one son in their marriage

RIC with home county of Kilkenny has a Abraham Mitchell 1841, says he is stationed in Offaly/Kings that very close in years to the chap above station in Newry, he could have moved I guess, or there could be two.

I miss read the year, it says he married in 1848, I think 1841 is the year he joined up, so he can't be the same guy as in the newspaper.

Abraham Mitchell would have been moved out of home county upon joining the police and when he married would not have been posted where his wife was from so moving about from county to county was not uncommon.

This could be the right man- Abraham Mitchell, farmer & pensioner, born c1825, widow Eliza-

William was married in 1874, and his parents are not marked as deceased the time line looks about right

Abraham Mitchell's daughter Louisa married RIC constable Thomas Hayden (their 3 sons with Hessie Jane Mitchell in 1901). Here's son Arnold Hayden's birth-

Hayden/Mitchell marriage 1889-

1911 census gives Louisa Hayden as born King's Co.- six children so lots more relatives to check out!
