There is a James McClusky(born Ireland) on 1851 census. He's living with his mother in the same area (Botchergate) as Mary Ann and he is recorded as being Married, but there is no wife. His age is transcribed as 30 but it looks more like 20 when you look at the census. Possible contender?

There's another mention in Carlisle Journal on 28/06/64. James McCluskey brought back from Middlesboro by warrant for failing to maintain his wife and children. Don't have a sub to British Newspaper so can't see full article.

Then a mysterious grandson turns up in 1881, this family is really mixed up.

One of the daughters was a teacher, then a dress maker, so I’m suspecting that’s who had the illegitimate child, but who knows, expect the least expected 🤣🤣

occupation is a plaster - he’s married to Marjory nee  SCOTT
they have 2 children Jno age 4 & Mary age 1 and are living in Middlesbrough in
1861 - RG 9; Piece: 3688; Folio: 67; Page: 33;

perhaps that’s the reason there is no marriage to  a Mary DUFF
