Parkgate, Dumfriesshire
« on: Sunday 10 February 19 06:18 GMT (UK) »
Hello!

The inscription on the back of this says "This is Great Grandpa William Saunders and [Great] Aunt Jessie at their home at Parkgate with Diamond the horse and gig."

I believe it is Parkgate, Dumfriesshire in Scotland. Some info here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parkgate,_Dumfries_and_Galloway

Old map of the farm here: https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=17&lat=55.1793&lon=-3.5370&layers=168&b=1

William Saunders (BIRTH 1840 • Old Luce, Wigtownshire, Scotland - DEATH 27 FEB 1903 • Broadwigg Farm Cottage, Whithorn, Wigtownshire, Scotland).

Jessie Saunders (BIRTH 25 DEC 1871 • Carmelo, Colonia, Uruguay - DEATH 10 OCT 1913 • Disdow, Gatehouse of Fleet, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland).

1) I'm wondering if anyone can fix up this photo? I might be able to get a higher quality one if needed.

2) I'm also wondering if anyone can tell me about the carriage? Perhaps that would be a way to date the photograph.

Many thanks!

It's Edwardian. A possibility up to WW1.
The carriage is a pony & trap.

Certainly a better quality scan would be a good idea - this is showing at only 72dpi.   Needs to be at least 300 dpi if you can manage it for good restoration of photo which is pretty badly damaged.

Many thanks Jim1. As William died 1903, that would seem to give us a date range 1901-1903 :)

I will see if I can get a 300dpi copy as suggested. Many thanks!

Here is a quick repair, but like Wiggy said, a higher resolution image would be much easier to get a reasonably good restoration.
