It’s very common to find people’s reported birthdates vary by a year or two over the course of their lifetime records - and death records are particularly prone to error because inevitably the information was not provided by the (deceased) person themselves.

Oh gosh yes found death records were not that reliable! When I started out, I asked my uncle as he filled out my granddads death certificate but he was only in his 20's and he couldn't remember all of what was put so I ordered it hoping to narrow down where in Durham my granddad was from and my uncle just put "Durham" haha

Think Mary J Gray is on 1939 (1901 birth on free index)  2nd november by elimination.

Presumably you have seen the description of Robert in 1939?  For legal reasons we can’t give you information (other than free index information) from the 1939 Register, but you have found it yourself.

You’d think his death registration must be out there somewhere, as his 1939 entry is not redacted.

I found the Mary J Gray on the 1939 but waiting for verification that it's her going through the people she was living with at the time.

Yes have seen how Robert was described but my uncle was taken to meet him as a baby and by then the grandparents he was living with had passed so want to know who he was living with and was thinking it may of been one of the sister as if it was his mum my uncle would of gone up to meet him and her.

What year (roughly) would it have been that the uncle met Robert (as that narrows down the window for possible deaths for Robert)?

Is there any likelihood that he would have needed institutional care?

Do you know his middle name (initial W)?

I found the Mary J Gray on the 1939 but waiting for verification that it's her going through the people she was living with at the time.

She was in a workplace (hotel) rather than a family/domestic setup.
