Stockton Street, Middlesbrough

Hi everyone, Im trying to track down my ancestor William Henry Hill. The family knowledge is sketchy and we are wondering if this was even his real name! Anyway, his marriage certificate shows both him and my great great grandmothers residence as 101 Stockton Street Middlesbrough in 1904. As neither is listed as coming from the area (info recorded on later census documents) I'm curious what they were doing there and why they lived at the same address. Does anyone know what this address might have been used for? He ultimately moved to Portsmouth to work in the docks so Im thinking the same sort of work in Middlesbrough. Finally, although we have the marriage certificate we don't have the Banns document. Would that give us any more information thane already have? Thanks so much x

Whereabouts are they each living on the 1901 census? 

It could be they both were working in that area and met that way - does it give any occupation for her? 

What were the fathers name and witness names, one or other could have had family in the area.

We can't find him in 1904 because we are having trouble even confirming who his parents are or find his birth certificate. Its like he only exists after they get married! The last time we can see her is in 1891 and she's listed as a scholar but she's a boarder in a property in Scotland. Her Father is a carpenter and is in Wales in 1901. Its all been quite tricky to figure out. Ive tried to find the witnesses too but with only their names to go on that isn't working either.

I see.  Who does he say his father is on the marriage and what occupation does he say his father has?

How old was he when he married and where did he say he was from on later census?

Is he William Henry Hill, 1883 to 1975, from Glossop, with an extensive tree on Ancestry with photos?

Yes - thats either my tree you are looking at - King Family tree or my cousins Hogbin. You will see we can't get birth certificates or Mothers name or any details on his father Herbert which is why Im trying to find other info

His father is listed as Herbert Hill  - Farmer. No occupation for 1904 but in 1911 he was 27, listed as a General laborer and in Portsmouth.

Did any of his children mention aunts or uncles on his side of the family?

Have you considered the possibility that William is illegitimate?

In the 1891 census there is one Herbert Hill who is a farmer living at Derby Road, Marston upon Dove, Burton upon Trent, Derbyshire

He is the only one who shows up as a farmer.

I checked the 1851 census and found Herbert with his parents George and Ann and two brothers.  I found the same parents in 1861 with the addition of two daughters.

Either of the girls would be old enough to have a child in 1883.
