Workhouse Record (Need All The Help I Can Get)
« on: Monday 11 February 19 22:33 GMT (UK) »
??? This is new, to me. Never seen one of these before. Can't read it. Don't know what it means.

Maybe, once the writing people have done their thing, I could move the shots to where ever people know about work houses? What ever .....

Here's the top of the sheet. To show ye what the columns are:

This is the lower part. Man I'm interested in is PRINCE. Stone mason. Just wondering what diet he's on. And who put him in there.

Many thanks for any insights  :)

A person could apply to be admitted if they had no other option, or they could be ordered there by the Guardians of the Poor.  The Guardians would assess each persons circumstances.  The Mr. Dalton who admitted Mr. Prince could have been a Guardian or a Relieving Officer.  The Master could also assess and admit - as has happened on your form in some cases.

I've just been looking into a suicide inquest, where the Guardians accused a widow of lying about her daughter's income, cut all her relief payments, and ordered her and her children to leave their home and be admitted into the workhouse.  The poor lady committed suicide rather than have that happen.  It turns out that the Guardians were over-zealous and her daughter very rarely earned more that she declared.
In earlier times it would have been the parish officials, Overseers of the Poor, who admitted people.

Not sure about different diets thought.

There you go..

http://www.workhouses.org.uk/life/food.shtml

very interesting

looks as if Mr Prince was 1., not employed in work, so would not have been fed quite as much as someone who was working.  Hard labour, stone breaking etc would need more calories.

Thanks, Claire. Grim stuff, isn't it?

Actually, what makes it even More so is the potential that, if my records link up; Mr Prince first appears as a five year old. Completely alone. In a Work House!  :o

Doesn't bare thinking about, does it?

well, they made them grim on purpose!  Didn't want any freeloaders eh.  The more I find out about them, the sadder I get.  Separating husband and wife, pushing unmarried pregnant women in there.  One lady who lived in what my OH calls his Ancestral Home (it's a hovel!!) did not report the death of her husband for ages because she didn't want to end up in the workhouse.  Guess where she ended her days?
My great great grandad was sentenced to three months hard labour, not sure where, for stealing a chicken (a live one).  It finished him off.  And for some men, that was all they had until they worked themselves to death in the workhouse - breaking stones, crushing bones, or road mending into their 80s.  Very sad.

To find out who put him there you will need to scroll up the record to where the ditto " marks stop and a name appears.  They have 'ditto-ed" to save having to write the word out in full. You can see in the sample that some have been sent along by 'Church', 'Ro Church', 'Wesleyan'.

Other columns say 'Dalton' and '9th'. Can't fully read  the last column as I cannot download and enhance the writing.  Any chance of uploading a JPG or PDF of the lines you are interested in pl.
Last column has 'Inquire' as one of the words.

Thanks, Shanreagh.

Yeppers. I'd spotted the thing with the ditto's. Think everyone in my mans column was from the name at the top.

Not sure, now. Been going like the clappers, all night.

Interested in which diet he was on.

Have to return to this, when I've rested my head  :P
