Hi all my helpers!
Well this is where I have gotten to and I thought I would share.  1 so you could see the fruits of your labour and 2 so you can let me know if I'm barking up the wrong tree  ;D

He was 'underage' on enlistment in October 1851 & continued so until 16 April 1855 [so 18 in April 1855 - implying birth 16 April 1837]; this 4 years service is not counted in his 20 yrs 291 days. He may have inflated his age....he then had to maintain whatever age he said he was throughout his army career & probably came to believe it himself. Army record says he is 39 yrs 3/12 in 1875. Ellen says she is married in 1881, not widowed.

The last page of Thomas’s service record confirms Josey’s assessment. Thomas was born Belfast and was aged 14 years 6 months on enlistment in Limerick.

Hi Sue, I see you have already updated your tree on Ancestry.

One thing to remember, the RC baptism for Thomas was written in Latin, therefore, his mother is still likely to be Ellen or Helena rather than Hellena.

All for the back burner - not confirmed yet!!

And here are an Owen & Alice in 1861: RG 9; Piece: 2458; Folio: 10; Page: 13; 4 Melbourne Yard, Nottingham [the 63rd foot army pension records on findmypast show Owen's pension was transferred to Belfast from Nottingham in June 1861]. He was discharged in 1857 after 22 yrs service.
Owen Lappin   42 b Ireland Sergt  [haven't worked out the next word yet] Indian Army so born ca 1818
Alice Lappin   40 b do
Mary Lappin   12 b Sunderland
Joseph Lappin   10 b Ireland
James Lappin   7 b do
Alice Lappin   5 b do
Ellen Lappin   2 b St Mary's Nottingham
Sarah Jane Lappin   8/12

so Thomas maybe did have a brother James (see reply #9).

The Indian bmd records on ancestry show some baptisms & burials of children to Owen & Alice.

Here's a possibility for Sarah
