I have reservations about "Sporn", and looking at the entry closely I think that the word may be a rather poorly written "Spring", - with the remaining four letters quite faint and indistinct.

Could this possibly be Springbank which was located in the east end of Glasgow, just north of the Cunnigar Loop on the R.Clyde.  The BGS records indicate that there was a sandstone quarry at Westmuir, some 500yds NE of Springbank, which may tie in with the fathers occupation given on the death certificate.

Mapping shows that this area has been massively developed and redeveloped since the early 1800's, with its most recent incarnation resulting from the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Good spot, Istrice. "Spring bank" is actually quite a credible reading of that middle bit. Well done.

Thanks Forfarian, Rosinish and Istrice. This has progressed further than I thought it would.

I think we have a consensus on the Baptism wording…
Margret Scot a NS  John Reid born in Springbank __ Wm Thomson Sponsor.

What parish would have covered Springburn? (Anderson, Barony, Blyswood, Gorbals, Springburn…)

I have a front runner for the birth of Isabella McNaughton and that is a baptism at Cargill, Perthshire on 3 June 1770 to James McNaughton who was living at Strelitz. I can see two siblings to Isabella – Alexander 1773 and James 1786, I can’t help feeling there were others. There are no marriage records from Cargill between around 1767 and 1824, which is in the range that a John Scott & Isabella McNaughton marriage would have been in. I have sent off for a list of inhabitants of Strelitz in 1766 which may have Isabella’s parents.

Back to John Reid Scot. Where might I look to see if there are any Kirk session records associated with John Reid Scot’s birth and at what parish/s. I am on the other side of the earth (NZ)

Baptism was Parish of Glasgow (Parish in it's own right) in County/City Glasgow which is the heart of Glasgow i.e. the Parish of Glasgow would be separate from the list you enquired about.

Thanks Annie.

I was more thinking about where he was born in case that parish had something to do with ensuring the child didn't become a burden on the church. I had a search for Springbank but couldn't understand if it came under the central Glasgow parish or one of the surrounding parishes - or have I got this wrong?

If he was baptised in the parsh of Glasgow then IMO it is most likely that he was also born in the parish of Glasgow.

As you are in NZ, I think this might be a task for a professional searcher. If you want to go down this route, see http://www.asgra.co.uk/
