Fire at "Longreach Hotel"-1963
« on: Tuesday 12 February 19 08:18 GMT (UK) »
The Death of Vincent James Mullins, Longreach, Qld on 30th August 1963.

He tragically was burnt to death and the place of residence was given as The Longreach Hotel, Longreach.

An inquest was held in Longreach 31 Aug 1963 by D.O'Connor, Government Medical Officer.

James occupation was given as Shearers cook.

I have tried to look on Trove for various reports but given it was 1963 just outside the timeframe  scope I would suspect.

Also tried the Longreach Library and no further there either.

I have the copy of death cert and wish to look further at the  Inquest records.

Can you please suggest other avenues to find further please?

Thanks

Hi,

The State Library of QLD should be able to help you with Newspaper articles, they are usually pretty good at helping. Im not sure about recent times but years ago they would do a hour or 2 search for free, not sure if this has changed over the years or not.

Qld State archives should be able to help you with the inquest. Drop them a email with the details you have and they will let you know if its available and what cost would be involved.

The same as you i couldnt find anything in Trove neither.

Does the d.c. actually state that he died because of a fire at the hotel ..... could he have died at his workplace as a result of a work accident,   or died at the hospital or perhaps he was with a social  group outing and he was injured ...

As a Shearers Cook ...would he have belonged to a Trade Union and if so,  would there be Union records available ....

The death cert is as follows:
Description
When died and where:30 August 1963  Longreach Hotel  Longreach
Cause of death: Burnt to death.

Good suggestion on the Trade Group Unions, where would one access those records?

Have you asked Google re where to find Qld Trades Unions' Archives?

I am not familiar with Qld researchings but ...

Likely former name of the state based association of Trade Unions may be Qld Trades and Labour Council. I am not sure what the current name would be,  but they should know what Trade Union would cover Shearers Cooks,  and also hopefully,  who holds the Archives. Work place acccidents resulting in death usually need involvement from inspectors from Workers Compensation statutory bodies with reports to government etc ...
