Demo thread . . . . . SCANNING . . . . for new photo posters.
« on: Tuesday 12 February 19 10:58 GMT (UK) »
 . . . . . . showing the difference a decent scan can make to the restorers.   ;)

Obviously a postage stamp - so very small.

Three different dpi scans.
First is pretty bad on the eyes.
Second one is best  - for this size photo  (300 dpi is usually OK)
- last one had to be compressed a bit to fit allowed size of 500kbs.

So it is possible to  post small photos with decent scans.

Thank goodness we do not have to repair all those little perforations :-). Scan quality does make a huge difference!

Well done, Wiggy. I hope that these  illustrations of the importance of a good scan are noted.

I remember, many years ago, sitting up into the early hours teaching you to scan (Pels had taken herself off to bed and left me to it  ;D )

You've come on in leaps and bounds since then.

Thanks Gadget - - -  I remember being a slow learner . . . .

But some photos being posted now remind me of when i was learning and the angst I put you and other restorers through, so just trying to help newbies.    ;)

JF!  I can't believe you repaired that!!!   ;D  ;D  -  just shows a decent scan willl encourage even perforation repair!   ;D

This is such a useful post Wiggy, it accurately demonstrates the value of a good quality scan and the difference it can make to the outcome, it also makes our job so much easier.

Thanks folks     - - We can but hope.

After I'd been taught, and learnt by trial and error, to scan, I put up this photo from a locket - so absolutely tiny.

Look what those folks did with it!  Beautiful.   Well worth scanning it properly.

While I agree with the previous comments it is also worth noting that if a picture is being scanned for posterity use the highest possible optical resolution your scanner is capable of.

The reason for this is very simple resolutions printers are capable of producing are increasing with every new model, even monitors are improving meaning that resolution limits of the past are limiting the reproduction of those images today.
When I first started scanning 72 dpi was the recommending setting for screen use, that resolution frequently results in pixellation on screen these days.

In other words if you are scanning to provide an archive image use the highest optical resolution available, if you are scanning to post online for restoration then 300dpi is recommended.

Cheers
Guy

Guy....With all due respect, there have been many photos restored on here with a 72dpi resolution and whilst it isn't the best for restoration purposes, you will see that the images don't pixelate when posted unless they have been over enlarged.
It must be remembered that not all posters have the original and in that event, we work with what we are given. Those that do have the originals often want them cleaned to print and frame, then put the originals away to preserve them. As for your suggestion that a resolution of 300dpi is recommended, that is dependant on the size of the original photo so please don't give misleading advice as it is unhelpful.

The guidelines are as follows for the benefit of posters reading this:

Postcard size or larger = 300dpi
Small photos and Cartes De Viste = 600dpi
Locket & Passport photos = 1200dpi
