Henry Alfred Wood bc 1834
« on: Tuesday 12 February 19 14:58 GMT (UK) »
The above married Anna Maria Hutchings (1839-frm 1916 to 1925) at Adelaide, South Australia 3 Aug 1861; they had one son that I can find Francis Ernest Wood b 2 Feb 1869 Adelaide; I suppose there could be more? The details of Anna's passing seem very sketchy to say the least! I can find no records for Henry and Francis?

Looks like Henry Alfred WOOD took off with Kate Lowery, otherwise Kate Burnette, for conspiracy to defraud the South Australian Government of Six thousand six hundred pounds, nine shillings, and one penny. There is a good description of both, in Police and Government Gazettes.
https://www.ancestry.com/boards/localities.oceania.australia.sa.general/2195.2.1.1.2/mb.ashx
Thread also mentions... The New York Times in 1885 gave an even bigger figure for what they called 'forging and uttering' of a cheque to secure him the funds. Some stories talk about 'gold bullion' . It must have been very hard for his family who did nothing wrong. The real story of 'where he ended up' would probably be amazing. He must have been very alert to cover his tracks as he was never apprehended. Prior to the need for warrants he held a very important position in the government and had never put foot wrong before that. He had done very good work in the insolvency/embezzelment area examining others.

Thread names children as Percy Dugold Wood, Phoebe Annie Wood, Francis Ernest Wood, Eva Wood, Arthur Christian Wood, possible christian names Harry & Charles Wood.

Wow, cupoflife, what a tangled web of lies and deceit some ancestors lived! Thank you so much for your very thorough research, I have emailed the originator on the Anc message board to see if more can be found about their children. Also I found 4 of the 5 children of Phoebe Annie.
