Alfred "Johnson" "Johnston" Sunderland Durham
« on: Wednesday 13 February 19 01:03 GMT (UK) »
Alfred Johnson was born 1st qtr 1855 Sunderland Durham the son of William Thomas Johnson and Ann Whitfield
.
Alfred Johnson b Mar qtr 1855 Sunderland RD
Volume:   10a Page:   553
On the 1861 census thru 1881 he is listed as Johnson and his profession in 1871 is Railway clerk. On the 1881 census he is married with a wife whose first name is Emily and three children. All born Sunderland   His profession is locomotive Engineer.  The childrens first name were Eliza, Robert and Mary Johnson.  Eliza was born 1876/77  The Last name is JOHNSON

I could not find a marriage of a Alfred Johnson to a Emily

On the 1891 census I found a Alfred  JOHNSTON Railway Engine Driver and his birth was c1854 in Sunderland.  His wife name is Emily and her age fits and I found the following children born Sunderland
Eliza 1877  Robert Ellen Louisa Emily Ann and Mary Elizabeth  All the children are Johnston's

I then searched for a Alfred Johnston marrying a Emily in Sunderland pre 1876 and found a marriage

Hilkiah Briggs
Alfred Johnston
Emily Ann Maggs
Mary Oxley
Perhaps my Alfred's surname was changed to Johnston and his wifes name is Emily Maggs.

On the 1901 census  I found them again under Johnston and Alfred still has the right job and the children fit.
Emily has changed her birthplace to Chermerton Somerset but she also fits.

So it would appear to me I have the right family.   This is the first time I have come across this where a Johnson becomes a Johnston.  All of his siblings remained Johnsons.   Do I change his last name to Johnston or are there two Alfred Johns(t)ons with the same job at the same time.

I also found this birth registration on someones tree records which really threw a wrench into the wheels

So now I am totally confused if there are two Alfred's or one and its just coincidence that the childrens names are the same chronologically.

This looks to me to be 2 couples on same page i.e. your Alfred & Emily then another couple Hilkiah & Mary.

Variants of surnames were common i.e. nothing to worry about.

Thanks Stan,

It is all sorted now.   Your info helped me but my Johnson turned out to be neither of them in the end but I would not have realized that without your input.

Elimination is as good as confirmation, glad Stan was able to help in your decision to move course.
