Missing great grandfather
« on: Wednesday 13 February 19 17:18 GMT (UK) »
Started my tree on my mother’s side but already hit a snag.

My grandfather
Roy Edgar Martin.  27/10/1921. Tadcaster, Yorkshire.
But born Ball.
Not found on any census due to joining RAF in 1938. While in service changed his name to Martin.

His mother Marion Ball 16/04/1902 York, Yorkshire.
On the 1911 census but nothing there after.
His brother  Terrance Ball 1924 birth record but nothing else.

Nothing at all about his father no name no nothing, his mothers mother Rachel Ann Gray 1876-1945 married a guy named George Henry Martin after William Ball ( Marion’s father) but nothing else that links the name to my grandfather.

There is this death which could match Terences birth.  As his birth was registered in March qtr 1924 it is possible that he was born late 1923.

TERENCE BALL
Birth 29 December 1923
Death September qtr 1994
Hereford reg dist
District no. 5161B
Register no. B16D
Entry no. 075

You are unlikely to find out who his father was unless something appears in local papers or a baptism record.  DNA could obviously also help.

His birth was registered in March qtr 1924 Tadcaster he can't have been born in December 1924.  As you have his birth as 29th December that does look like his death

Ancestry online trees are way out for Terence , some have him born in the U.S others have him dying there.

The GRO index shows both his birth & death in England so they must be wrong   ::)
