What happened to Oscar Lushington?
« on: Wednesday 13 February 19 18:39 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone,
I have a bit of a brainteaser at the moment, so any help would be very welcome.
The story is that Oscar Lushington who was the son of John Impett Lushington and bn 1822/1826 Tonbridge, married Elizabeth Wood  bn c 1826 the daughter of Thomas Wood, at St. Nicholas, Rochester 12/7/1843. On 1/6/1845 the couple had a daughter, Frances Lushington, christened at All Saints, Staplehurst. Oscar was described as a Veterinary Surgeon.
When the child was 5 years old she was living as a boarder with members of my ancestral family in Frittenden/Staplehurst, them being Alfred Hope and his wife, Harriet, according to the 1851 census. In the 1861 census Frances is still living with Alfred and Harriet Hope and is called their "adopted daughter"  Frances eventually married a John Diprose but was widowed soon after having her first child, and eventually married a second time in 1869.
What I am trying to find out, is what happened to Frances' parents. was she orphaned or abandoned? There is a marriage at Cranbrook J1859 for an Elizabeth Lushington and John Bassett which could be the mother (not proven at his stage) but I have been unable to find any reference to Oscar Lushington beyond 1845.
Hoping someone will have more luck tracking him down.
Thanks for reading

There are a number of newspaper articles for the above Oscar in the 1840's. It would appear that he was a poet and had his works published in various newspapers. There is a reference to him being the nephew of Dr Lushington. Do you have a Dr Lushington in the tree?

Unfortunately as yet there is no connection to this man and Kent  ???

Hi JJ,
Thank you for your input, but I am unable to find much on the Lushington family whatsoever. Oscar's father died between the 1841 and 1851 census and no occupation was detailed for him, but I will see if there are any clues to John's family in case he had a brother who was a Doctor.
Will post if I find anything.

There's a younger John Impett Lushington b c1831, who marries in 1879 - son of John Impett Lushington, officer in the army

Added - a fair few Lushingtons are witnesses, but none are obviously Oscar
