Without father's name you can search every James with a brother Daniel..... but then which ones are they the son of??

Even if you only find 3 Daniel/James as brothers it gets you nowhere!
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

Even if you only find 1, you have no proof it is correct

That is true. I have learned over the years not to assume that just because the names match up, that automatically means that this is the person we are looking for.

I am aware that records were destroyed in a fire but the best advice I have given my friend is to order the marriage certificate. With it she will know father's name and occupation, and that we at least give us something extra to work on.

As for Danny. I mentioned that he emigrated to Canada from Liverpool. I don't know when this happened - can it be found?

So you don't know if father is named or not!

Rather than

"Does it not say who he was son of?"

"Afraid not, but I am going to ask my friend further questions such as that to establish any further research."

My friend only knows her grandfathers name and when he, and how, he died, and that she believes James' wife Mary placed a notice in the local newspaper in Ireland. I did go back to her with several questions such as dob etc but she didn't know. Even when she mentioned his death she said he was 45-49 years old. She mentioned that he had a brother called Danny.

What she gave me was very little, but from using familysearch and freebmd (I don't have any subscription sites), I was able to find 1) his registration of death and 2) registration of marriage. She says she already has his death cirt but having moved house recently its been put in boxes and could be anywhere (I think we've all been there).

What we know as fact is very little but it is a starting point, and whilst a marriage cirt would only add an extra name (his fathers), it just gives us something extra to go on.

I think she mentioned also that one of her Uncles visited Ireland in the hope of researching the family history. I don't know when this was but he came back empty handed by all accounts.

Unless yourself or anyone else can suggest anything new?

In the meantime, what about a passenger list to Liverpool for James Roche?
