Just a thought
« on: Thursday 14 February 19 16:16 GMT (UK) »
Hi all  :)

Not having a gripe, well ok I am...

Since having my DNA tested, at Xmas, at one of the major sites, it has renewed my interest in FH and my tree. Have been following just a paper trail, on and off since about 2003 since my Dad passed.

Well, I am amazed at the number of people who have payed to have DNA testing done but have no tree, to find a connection!  :o

Also those you message, have either not shown interest for months, years!! or do not reply at all!   >:(

I cannot say I am disappointed, more disgruntled.

Have any others found this is the norm?

Ok, got it off my chest, gripe over..  :-X

Hi,
Oh Yes! I have replied with information and asked questions at the end of the post to help further.
No reply from them.
Then maybe 8 months to 5 years later they reply.
I say "sorry but I dumped what I found as you didn't reply"
Then tell them the sites that will have to join to get their info.
Yes, it bugs me as to why they ask in the first place.

I thought the same as you at the beginning, Cas, but it has gradually got better and have had some really useful contacts and trees - mind you, some trees are pretty rubbishy so not worth it!

Have you uploaded your results to other sites? this will spread the number of 'cousins' that you might have matches with.

Also, have you checked some of the articles suggested on this board - for example https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=806378.0

Hope you can get some shared matches with trees and replies to messages soon  :)

Not uploaded DNA to any other site, as am on IPad, no comp, so don't think I can at mo.

Any queries that you have, just give a shout and someone will try to help. I did mine about 9 months ago and am really enjoying the discoveries. Margaret, in particular, has been really helpful  :)

It really is best to have done a lot of traditional genealogical research before hand, as you have done. I see DNA as just anther resource, akin to BMDs, etc.

I downloaded my raw DNA data to my tablet, it comes as a zip file, which you do not open, unless you are curious.

If you tested at ancestry, instructions are here -

https://thednageek.com/how-to-transfer-your-ancestrydna-test-to-other-databases/

If elsewhere, similar applies, I'll try to find a link for downloading from other sites as well.

As for replies, it does vary considerably, but it is often the other person who loses out, rather than yourself. There are 2 related close matches to me where I know from shared matches the line they are descended from. There is a decent sized private tree attached to their results, and as it is not too far back, I think I could find the connection. They share 57 and 61 cM with me, probably 3rd cousin type relationship, which fits in with paper trail. But manager will not engage after the first 2 messages.
