Patience Ayres / James Discovered
« on: Thursday 14 February 19 16:35 GMT (UK) »
;) They don't get past Me that easily!

Completely random thing, this. But, I was looking at this bloke, Steer. Found him in Odiham, Hampshire. 1851. All's looking much as it should do. Except, bottom of the line up, he has " Patience Ayres ~ MIL / Widow." Age 59.

Caught my eye, obviously! But, when I checked the 1861 census? Now, she's giving it " Patience James "! 76.

Fascinating stuff! I've penciled Henry's wife in as " Alice " (Try to see what That flushes out).

Lo and behold; The pit is suggesting 'Ellen' JAMES! (Ellen / Ellis / Alice? You tell me!)

It gets Seriously hectic though, when Her and Henry's son knocks out a girl they call " Canay ". Then, boys, " Egar " and " Heurter O "! (Sounds like Heturah; But, that's a girls name  ???)

Okay. I'm floundering here! Any input or suggestions most welcome! This is like quicksand!  :o

Edited to say: Okay. I just penciled Ali / Elli in as James and the world imploded! I'm off to lay down!

Rather interesting

GRO
STEER, ERNEST  WILLIAM     AYRES
GRO Reference: 1854  D Quarter in HARTLEY WINTNEY  Volume 02C  Page 122

If Ellis was his mother she was using the surnames Ayres not Hughes as her maiden name.

Again

Ellis Eyers bp.9/9/1821 Fordingbridge, Hampshire, illeg. dau. of Patience Eyers.

Mmm - so Patience Ensor married John Hughes in 1803, by 1821 Patience now known as Eyers/Ayres has illegitimate daughter Ellis who marries Henry Steer 1842 and names her mothers former husband, John Hughes, as her father.

Well, at least I've accounted for 3 of the names used in the family i.e. Ensor, Hughes and Ayres.   Suspect that a Mr. James may have been Ellis' actual father - when 1st daughter Patience Steer, Dec.1844 Hartley Wintney mmn is Ayres - 2nd daughter Casey Isabella Steer Dec.1848 H.W. mmn is James.

Who Mr. Ayres was (name Patience using in 1821 and later) heaven knows.
