SA service records are not held with British records and are not, as far as I can see, separately held on Ancestry or FindMyPast (the latter has a SA Roll of Honour but this does not list medals).

http://rapidttp.co.za/milhist/index.html may help

A big thank you to MaxD, got shock of my life when I opened my emails to find a full set of records for R A Simpson from the South African Archives office.I had not given them the number for my second man but have now done so, we will see if they can find his records. Thanks again MaxD you are a credit to ROOTSCHAT.

Kind words - thank you, glad it all fell into place.

Now you know which units(s) your man served with, there are a number of war diaries at the National Archives which you may like to look at, (a number of those for France/Flanders are on Ancestry)

Good luck with the other man

Hi MaxD, It is a very full and detailed record , Robert Alexander Simpson served in German East Africa. He only served for 1 year and 276 days before being declared unfit for service and discharged at Roberts Heights. So not sure if records for C Company S A I would be on National Archives. But once again thanks for going that bit Farther with supplying me with the contact details which has allowed me to find out a lot more about Robert than what was on the edge of his medal.

Colin

There are war diaries but one needs to know which infantry battalion his C Company was part of and what his dates were.  Are you able to ferret that out from his record?
