RN Record
« on: Saturday 16 February 19 13:12 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I have just received my Father's WW2 records, and I am hoping one of you will be able to help me interpret them. He was in the Royal Navy, HMS Columbo, and he was a Radar Mechanic, John Douglas.

First, I have only received the Central Record Card, and the letter says more information may be forthcoming, but that could take a year! Is that usual? (If I had taken a year to do something when I was working . . . !!)

Anyway, this record tells me he was a radar mechanic, and then it says

s161 Vic IV

Does anyone know what that means please?

Also: there is a family story that Dad was sent to a Chinese ship when he was in the Med, to mend their radar. Afterwards, as a reward, they offered him a meal, and he asked for chips. When they came he though they were a lovely colour, but when he tasted them he realised they were made from sweet potatoes!

Is this likely? Were there Chinese ships in the Med? Or perhaps he was on Columbo when it was in the far east? I see from the WWW that she was in the far east, but he never spoke of China or India, so what did that story mean/

Any ideas or suggestions would be welcome. Many thanks

If the vessel he served on was HMS Colombo (there doesn't appear to have been a Columbo), then he was both in the Mediterranean and the Far East

The Republic of China Navy was used only in China during WW2.

While someone may have an answer, it is usually easier to decipher fragmentary entries if they can be seen in context on the record.  Are you able to post a pic of the card or at least the part of the record on which the note appears showing what column headings and other entries relate to it.

Are you not able to post the record or part of it?

Hi MaxD

Thank you for your replies. Yes, I have problems posting docs in RC! I am sorry for not replying earlier. I have been waiting for inspiration, and also for a bit of free time that I knew I would need to enable me to fiddle around. I have scanned it and saved it, but RC tells me it is too big to post. I might reduce the size in some MS digital imaging software I have, but that doesn't seem to want to work on a PDF file. So I put it into a Word file, but it's still  too big. Any ideas would be welcome!

And, yes, it's Colombo. Thank you.

Many thanks

Hi everyone

Just to say MaxD has kindly helped me privately. If anyone else has any comments or experiences from HMS Colombo in the Mediterranean from around 1942 onwards, I would be interested to hear.

And for the record, S 161 was a form recording changes relating to pay, ratings, discharges etc sent to (in this case) the accounting base.
