RAMC number
« on: Saturday 16 February 19 14:10 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone. I'm new here in the hope I can find some information on a possible relative...
It's a very long complicated story, but my great grandmother married a man named James Gardiner Mcpherson in 1947. My grandmother has never known who her father was and she had managed to locate her mother's marriage certificates in the hope they can give some clues.
The information on this marriage certificate concerning James Mcpherson includes an RAMC number of 7262330 and that he was a sergeant.
What I need to know is is this number a British army number or of another country?
If this is indeed my grandmother's father, it would make her happy knowing who he was.
Can any one help?

It certainly looks like a British 7 digit service number of the WW2 era and the number falls into the number block allocated to the RAMC which started 7245001.

His records however are still held by MOD they are not on line and if wanted to apply for them you'd need his death certificate which looks unlikely in your case.

Thank you. My grandmother is under the impression James could have been from Canada and came over to the UK during the war. Would his number have changed? Or is she completely wrong and James was British?

There is a death for James Gardiner McPherson in Hemsworth in 1969.  Born 4 October 1908. There's a possible matching birth in Edinburgh.

There's also a record of a British Army marriage in Jamaica on Christmas Day in 1938 -  James Gardiner McPherson and Nina Ann McDermott.

Hi Shaun

I found that info online too, and I'm almost certain it's him. I won't rule out the Jamaican marriage because my great grandmother married this James Gardiner mcpherson in 1947 so he could well have been married before like she was to a william jeffrey in 1936! It's all a messy tangled web!

Good sleuthing again ShaunJ!

UpPark camp was the HQ of the British Army in Jamaica so it looks as if he may have been serving pre-war.  Must have been if it is in the British Army marriage register - losing it!

If you get the death cert you should be able to apply for his records.
