william hurst search help
« on: Saturday 16 February 19 14:27 GMT (UK) »
i Have it a dead end in a branch of my family tree.
i am looking for hints on William Hurst born 14 Jan 1880 (unsure of birth location)
died 4 may 1943 in Leicester
he has links to Leicester and Leeds
his wife was Gladys Victoria May Ouzman born 23 jun 1897 in Spilsby Lincolnshire (married Nov 1918)
i have found a 1939 census which appears to have the correct family members but can't link anything to birth location or parents.
i know he moved around a fair bit as he was a military man but i don't know which regiment.
i know i might be asking a lot with the info i have but anything to nudge me in the right direction would be great.

Do you have his marriage as that should name his father.  Banns state he was a bachelor at the time of his marriage to Gladys

There is a William Hurst born c1881, son of William, a shoe finisher, and Rachel Ward, who may be the person

1881 - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q27J-C9M9

1901 - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XSHM-FF2

William Hurst, shoe finisher of Short Street, son of Thomas Hurst, Framework Knitter, married Rachel Ward, no father, on 13th September 1875 at St Margaret, Leicester

The birth of William of 1880 may have been registered in Wolverhampton.

Hi David. some interesting links there thank you, they seem to lead somewhere but still lacking some concrete evidence, does the marriage info you have put forward appear as it would on his marriage cert ? as i was thinking of applying for a copy as Rosie suggested

You would be better trying to get a copy of the marriage from FindMyPast - it gives all the information posted by David and would be a copy of the actual register with original signatures.  The info David has posted is what appears  ;D

Leicestershire libraries have free access to FindMyPast

I think I have found his army record which confirms that he was born in Wolverhampton and his parents were William and Gladys of Leicester.

I am running out of time so will double-check and get back to you tomorrow.

It is on Findmypast if you have access in the meantime.

I checked again and can confirm that it is his army record.

However, in my haste, I gave the wrong regiment - it should be the Lancashire Fusiliers.

It names his parents as William and Rachel and lists his siblings - Samuel, David, Thomas, Rachel and Annie of 9 North Bridge Place, Ellen Rutter of 93 Eastleigh Road, Alice Screeton (Screaton) of Great Central Cottages and Katherine Euston (Catherine Hewson) of 14 Thomas Street.

Also states that he married Gladys Victoria May.
