Please can someone help check the Bastardy File/s -now 'on-line) -by the Ipswich Records Office?
They have kindly sent me their 'site' -but I'm 'floundering' on it -and cannot seem to find what I'm looking for!  Any help would be greatly appreciated.   (have waited years to get this far).    I have:

James Moss Mortimer b1796  born 'Ashfield-cum-Thorpe to ANNE MORTIMER b1758 (nee Rowe)
George Mortimer*      b1798     "           "                 "           "             "                    "

(Both sons born AFTER Anne's husband Robert MORTIMER d 1793)  Maybe a Mr MOSS involved?

*George being my 5x g/g'father

Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi Valerie, How do you know that Robert died in 1793? So far I have'nt found a record of his death.
Robert and Anne married on  21 Jun 1776, Ashfield Cum Thorpe,Suffolk, I can see 5 children born between 1777 and 1791. Anne is still living in Ashfield Cum Thorpe in 1841 age 85.

Hi - I have had Robert's death as 1793 - for years.
 (can't remember where it came from - but I will try and double-check now.)
 However - a few scattered descendants each know of these 2 later chn born to Anne ... the church records show them each as 'bastard sons of Anne Mortimer (Rowe).

Yes - I have their sons Robt b1777-78/Robert 1781/Elizabeth 1783 William 1787 Amy 1791 PLUS: JAMES MOSS 1796 & GEORGE b1798.

Just had a thought, have you got an age with that burial record as it maybe one of the other 2 Roberts.

Hi - Robert Mortimer (Snr) bc1753  d1792 (just under 40yrs of age)

Robert & Ann's  lst son  Robert b1777 but died 1778
                      2nd son Robert b1781        "     1793

            their last child:   Amy  b1791

I've scrolled though the Bastardy Bonds for the 1700's at  Ipswich Records Office online and there no mention of Anne. Not all are online, they do have paper and card indexes but I suspect you will have to pay for a search.

In the 1841 census there is a James Mortimer b1796 with wife Frances. Living at Thedwestry, Suffolk. Another James b1796 with wife Sarah. Living at Dennington, Suffolk.
In 1851, George Mortimer born c1800 Ashfield, Suffolk with son James. Living at Wetheringsett.

Thank you so much for checking those files.  I suppose there wasn't any mention of a Mr Moss with Ann Rowe?  I really had thought there would be something/somehow - seeing that the church had recorded them as 'bastard' son/s of Anne Rowe.

'Yes',  that is my 'George' in Wetheringsett - he had/owned a timber mill there.
His brother James is still 'at large'!  Nothing else known.
