Adam Idington m Marion Merrylees or Mirrylees at Dirleton
« on: Sunday 17 February 19 10:26 GMT (UK) »
I'm not sure when Adam was born or when he married Marion but she was b 6 Aug 1729 Dirleton, they had 7 children that I could find, all born from 1751-1770.
The strange thing is that a son, George b 14 Oct 1753 appears to have married Jean Henderson 27 May 1780 at Saint Cuthberts Edinburgh, they had a son Adam b 17 Aug 1781 at Dirleton according to FreeReg, parents were George Eddington and Jean Henderson, Witnesses Adam & Andw Eddington.  As you can see the name Idington has become Eddington within 28 years.
My direct ancestor was James Henderson b 8 Feb 1767 at Yester who married Janet Idington b 20 May 1768 Dirleton at Prestonkirk 25 May 1793
Do you think that Idington, Edingtoun, etc,  has become Eddington?

Does look as if the two surnames have changed........not unusual at that time.

Yes.

G F Black's The Surnames of Scotland lists all three of those versions among the numerous variant spellings cited.

It seems that they intermingled the surnames as you confirm, so gets difficult to trace them!
Thank you both for your help.

Use wildcards on SP.
