The Richmond/Sarsons marriage record is on Ancestry, John Richmond is listed as full age, widower, labourer, father Joseph Richmond, labourer. 

Not sure if this helps or hinders  :-\

The John Richmond / Jane Sarsons family are here in 1851 so perhaps we should discount them

Yes, I agree we should rule them out Rosie.  It looks like a different family  :)

You can see now why I'm so stuck! It's driving me mad not being able to find out more about them.

Maybe they adopted him but wasn't there another grandchild with them on the census? 

Perhaps I am looking at the wrong family, wouldn't be the first time  :-[

Isn't that other 'grandchild' in 1871 Johns wife  :-\   They are both showing as married
